Fatty Liver Treatments

Fatty liver is the accumulation of fat inside liver cells and is also known as steatosis. Liver cells were not supposed to have fat piling up inside them and when they do their work gets compromised and with it your health. The dangers of this form of liver damage combined with its high frequency (33% of the American population suffer from fatty liver) have lead to an increasing interest in forms of preventing and reversing them.

Treatment #1 - Diet

STEATOSIS

Hipocrates already recognized the importance of diet over two thousand years ago and one theme is common among all fatty liver treatment studies - it only works if you follow the right diet. There are many types of diet that will help your liver, especially diets that help you lose weight, but the common recommendation of following a diet that leads to weight loss in order to reverse fatty liver has two major flaws: first, many people who have steatosis are not overweight, so this doesn't apply; and second, a fatty liver makes weight loss more difficult, so it would be better to have a strategy that would start healing your liver, which would then take care of burning the fat for you leading to weight loss.

Of all the diets studied, the vegetarian diet was the one that showed best results. Eating exclusively vegetables, fruits, and a few cereals (not nearly as much as the average American does) is a sure way to reverse fatty liver. But even if you don't want to become a vegetarian you can increase consumption of veggies and fruit and reduce animal products and still get a tremendous benefit.

Treatment #2 - Exercise

Exercise is another element that shows best results when applied over a diet. Exercise simply triggers your liver's fat burning system and the liver cells, naturally, start by burning the fat inside them already, effectively reversing steatosis.

Treatment #3 - Supplements

A few herbs haven been shown to not only reverse liver damage but also trigger liver regeneration, reverse liver cirrhosis, and even prevent and reverse early stages of liver cancer. Of those turmeric, milk thistle, artichoke and ginger are the most important and there are several commercial combinations available, as well as individual herbs.

Treatment #4 - Detox

The reason I put detox as the last treatment is because this is a supplement to the other three treatments. A detox on itself won't do much for your liver but when combined with the other strategies it proves to be a valuable tool for anyone suffering from fatty liver.
