The G6PD Diet

G6PD is also known as a Glucose-6-Phospate-Dehydrogenase deficiency. While it can be exacerbated by the foods you eat, a smart G6PD diet can actually help improve symptoms. A carbohydrate rich diet will help improve symptoms of the condition by aiding in fatty acid synthesis. Further, bacterial endotoxins can stimulate G6PD expression in hepatic sinusoidal endothelial and Kupffer cells, which is beneficial for the patient.

Several studies have been done to determine whether this condition can be regulated strictly through diet. In determining if a G6PD diet really does exist, freshly isolated cells from five groups of Sprague-Dawley rats were analyzed for G6PD activity and mRNA abundance. The rats were either denied food for 24 hour periods, or fed carbohydrate rich foods after being denied food for 48 hours. The results showed that in the endothelial cells, G6PD activity was 150% greater in carbohydrate group than in the non-food group. This proves that foods rich in carbohydrates can indeed help assuage the symptoms of this problematic condition.

In addition, it has been found that the best G6PD diet includes complex, rather than simple carbohydrates, so stay away from the sugar. Drink plenty of water, as well, in order to keep your system clean and functioning properly. Finally, take a good antioxidant supplement, because this will help clean up the oxidative damage that a deficiency of this particular enzyme can cause. In general, a healthful diet that includes plenty of fresh vegetables, fruit in moderation, and avoids beans is best for treating this disease.
